Natural Dye Workshop with Francesca Downing

Learn to dye a silk handkerchief using the technique of bundle dyeing. Using a variety of dried and fresh flowers, roots, and even bugs, students will extract color from the natural materials onto the silk. 

This class consists of a half hour of demonstration and then time for the participants to place their materials on their handkerchiefs, then roll and tie up their bundles with string. Then the bundles steam for an hour while students can have a picnic or cut their own flowers. Then we will reconvene to untie the bundles and reveal the colors and patterns created! 

Students will then wash their handkerchiefs at home using a ph neutral soap to have a forever unique silk handkerchief. These can be used in multiple ways such as; to blow your nose, to wear, to adorn a table or dresser, use for a shrine, or to place under a tarot spread.
